Muryani, Poster “Love our ocean”, 2010

DESCRIPTION:

Love Our Ocean Poster

Waita 21, a collaboration of the ASEAN countries plus the other 4 countries namely Australia, China, Japan and Korea, held a poster competition called “Ocean Life Heritage” last year. The theme was to create a poster that would encourage public awareness of ocean heritage conservation.

The interesting part was that, the poster should be created by using and exploring their unique native/ traditional patterns or ornaments.

I did a research, and found some details on the ornaments found in Indonesian traditional batik cloth. After brainstorming, I decided to create a semi-collage design, using creatures commonly found in the rich Indonesian ocean, and even included a mythical creature of a “Naga”, a creature known to be the guardian of the ocean. The concept was to show the richness and the many potentials of Indonesian ocean. On the top part, I added the megamendung/cloud patterns from Cirebon Batik, symbolizing (the up and down of) human’s life.

The colours were taken from a traditional colours of Javanese batik. Deep blue to symbolize fertility, and the brown for calmness, warmth and friendship. Overall, the poster contains a message of how we need to become friends with the oceans/ to care for them, thus reaping the fertility and resources from them.

We are honored invited by Indonesian Graphic Designer Association (ADGI) in collaboration with Bali Creative Community to participate in joining in campaigning World Silent Day. Celebrated March 21, every year, this is the day where people are advised to reduce activities, the use of motorized vehicle, energy, consumption and the use of other natural resources. Using a blank newspaper as an icon of modern day ephemera, as a metaphor for nothing should happen for a day. Give the earth a rest and let it grow.
