Benny “Bey” Kharismana has been working as a visual arts teacher at Sekolah Pelita Harapan Sentul City, Bogor since 2007. He taught middle and high school students in exploring the world of art and design. Under the IB (International Bachaularette) program, he realizes how much Indonesian middle education system hasn’t put enough attention to art education. He believes one of the reason why Indonesia has so many socio-cultural problem are because our lacking of art appreciation in our education.
During 3 years of teaching, he spent his time studying again the world of visual arts. From basic elements, history, art techniques up until art art criticism. One of the motivations is finding good methods to introduce the world of art and design to teenagers. He’s also an active member in JATI(Jakarta Art Teacher & I), a community of art teacher in Jakarta where regularly held Art Exhibition and Art Workshop for junior to high school students.
Learning art and design without formal education, he started by drawing comic when teenager and participated in several comic exhibitions. In high school, he gathered his peers to initiate a visual art extracurricular activity named SKETSA. Here, student who interested in comic, art, and design could gather and develop themselves. During his studio work in Landscape Architecture IPB, when more allowance was needed, he started to do some freelancing in graphic design. This has been a worthwhile journey where later on with his friend, he built a small graphic house in Bogor named Galasin Rancang Grafis. Knowing he needs to learn more, later he worked as graphic designer in TEMPO News Magazine, MakkiMakki Branding Consultant, and freelancing until now.
Comic, landscape architecture, graphic design, branding, and visual arts teaching. Who knows what next? Photography, illustration, interior, film, animation, or what. The common thing is it’s all about visual. Visual is the one thing that interests him. He always considers himself as an artist, a holistic visual artist.
